Barbara Merry, Chief Executive
Barbara joined the Hardy Underwriting Group Board on 29 January 2002, having been appointed as Chief Executive on 14 January 2002. She is a director of the other group companies. Barbara has extensive Lloyd's experience, having worked at the Corporation of Lloyd's for 14 years, latterly as a general manager in the regulatory division and then as managing director of another Lloyd's managing agent. Between 2003 and 2008 she was a member of the Lloyd's Market Association Board and a member of the Council of Lloyd's from 2007 to 2009 inclusive. She is on the board of the Association of Bermuda Insurers and Reinsurers. Barbara was appointed a director of Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited on 12 December 2007. She qualified as a chartered accountant in 1984.
Jamie MacDiarmid, Finance Director
Jamie joined Hardy in April 2003 as finance director of Hardy (Underwriting Agencies) Limited. He was appointed to the Board of Hardy Underwriting Group on 1 October 2003. He is also a director of other group companies. He was previously a manager with KPMG, specialising in the insurance sector, having qualified as a chartered accountant with Neville Russell in 1996. Jamie was appointed a director of Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited on 12 December 2007.
Paul Bailie, Managing Director - Bermuda
Paul Bailie is the Managing Director of Hardy Underwriting Asia Limited and was previously a non-executive director of Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited. Prior to joining Hardy, Paul was the Chairman of JLT Insurance Management (Bermuda) Ltd. Paul started his career with Willis in Belfast before moving to Bermuda in 1986 with Johnson & Higgins. Since that time he has largely been involved with alternative risk financing activity including the management of both captive insurance companies and other alternative market entities. Qualified as an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (ACII), Paul has been involved with various industry bodies and educational initiatives in Bermuda.
Patrick Gage, Director of Underwriting
Patrick joined Hardy in 2006 and was active underwriter for syndicate 38Twenty prior to its merger into syndicate 382 in 2009. He was appointed to the Hardy (Underwriting Agencies) Limited Board in September 2006 and to the Board of Hardy Underwriting Bermuda Limited in May 2011. Patrick is Hardy's Director of Underwriting for syndicate 382 and also Chief Underwriting Officer of Hardy Re. He has over 30 years experience in the Lloyd's and London Insurance market.
Thomas Motamed, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, CNA
Tom joined CNA in January 2009, as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. He also chairs an Executive Committee which is responsible for strategy, results and oversight of all business units of CNA Financial Corporation (NYSE: CNA), including direction of an Operating Committee. Prior to joining CNA, Tom retired from The Chubb Corporation, where he had served as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer. His 31-year career at Chubb began in 1977 when he joined the company as a Claims Trainee. He went on to hold various claims management positions, including managing attorney in-house counsel; and served in the company's field organization as marketing manager, branch manager and Western Zone Officer. Tom currently serves on the board of trustees for Adelphi University, chairman of the board of the Insurance Information Institute, as well as the board of directors of After School Matters, World Business Chicago and Verisk Analytics.
Craig Mense, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, CNA
Craig joined CNA in 2004 as Chief Financial Officer. He is also a member of the Chairman's Executive Committee which is responsible for strategy, results and oversight of all business units of CNA Financial Corporation (NYSE: CNA), including direction of an Operating Committee. Prior to joining CNA, he served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Run-off Operations for St. Paul Travelers. He also served in other leadership positions at Travelers Property & Casualty, including Chief Operating Officer, Gulf Insurance Group; and Chief Financial & Administrative Officer, Personal Lines. Craig is a Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU).
Thomas Pontarelli, Executive Vice President and Chief Administration Officer, CNA
Tom joined CNA in 1998, and currently serves as Executive Vice President and Chief Administration Officer. He is also a member of the Chairman's Executive Committee which is responsible for strategy, results and oversight of all business units of CNA Financial Corporation (NYSE: CNA), including direction of an Operating Committee. Prior to joining CNA, he worked with Washington National Insurance Company and its parent, Washington National Corporation, in a variety of legal and executive capacities, including the positions of Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer. Tom is a member of the board of Boys Hope/Girls Hope (Chicago).
Jonathan D. Kantor, Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, CNA
Jon joined CNA in 1994, and currently serves as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for CNA Financial Corporation. Prior to joining CNA, he served as a Partner in the Litigation Department of Shea & Gould, a national law firm. Jon is a member of the American Bar Association and the Association of Corporate Counsel.
